Christmas Turkey Lunch for Staff and Students

Christmas Lunch for Staff and Students

Nov 29, 2019

Dear Parents, Staff and Students:

It’s that time of year again when we prepare for Christmas Festivities. In keeping with the annual tradition at Holy Family, we will again be serving the students and staff a hot turkey dinner complete with all the fixin’s on Thursday December19, 2019! In the past, this lunch has been made possible due to the hard work and dedication of our generous volunteers.

This is always a very exciting event for the entire school population! We are looking for volunteers to help with a variety of tasks including your culinary skills! If you’re willing to cook a turkey or potatoes or if you could help serve lunch on Thursday December 20th, you’re just what we need. All of the food items will be supplied. Volunteers simply pick them up at the school, cook them at home and bring them into the school on Thursday morning.

Perhaps another family member such as Grandma or Grandpa could lend a hand? Don’t be shy! We would love your help…..Please contact Amanda Eagle at amanda.eagle2@gmail.com indicating how you can help by Thursday December 11th.

Your child will be asked to bring their own plate, cup, cutlery and serviette for this dinner. A reminder will be sent home next week. Thank you for your help in making the Christmas Lunch a huge success.

If you have any questions, please contact Sabrina Henhoeffer shenhoeffer1@gmail.com or 5195728762.

Sincerely,

Holy Family Catholic School Council

Wilmot Family Resource Centre Christmas Hamper Program

The Wilmot Family Resource Centre has identified a strong need for toiletry items and we as a school are going to work together to help fill it!
You can help support the Christmas Hamper program by sending in any of the following toiletry items:
  • Tooth brushes (children’s or adults)
  • Tooth paste
  • Dental floss
  • Chapstick
  • Shampoo & conditioner
  • Soap or body wash
  • Shaving cream (male or female)
  • Deodorant
  • Feminine hygiene products
Starting November 25th please send in any of the toiletry items listed above to school with your child.
We thought we could help stuff a stocking (with the emphasis on the toiletries but some actual stocking donations would be welcome)!  A representative from our school will pickup all items on Monday December 9th and take them to the Resource Centre so please send any donations in ON or BEORE this date.

All our generous donations will be received in time for Christmas as the Christmas hamper deliveries will be done throughout our community on Thursday December 12th.  Peace and Joy to you during this holiday season and thank you for giving hope to many community families this year.

Sincerely,

Holy Family Staff and Catholic School Council.

“Operation Christmas Shoebox Update” – A Huge “Thank You”!

Wow! What an over-whelming response we had last week to our Samaritan Purse Operation Christmas shoeboxes! Thank you so much to everyone who contributed and donated items to give to children around the world in need. The children will be so pleased with the gifts they receive.  As a school, Holy Family had so many donations that we filled ALL 25 of our boxes and still had more items to spare!! We will keep what remains and donate it to our next Christmas drive (Wilmot Resource Centre Christmas Hampers).

The Christmas Shoeboxes were dropped off on Friday November 22nd, and in New Hamburg alone they had already received almost 700 shoeboxes!!!  Imagine how many will be collected Canada wide and sent overseas!!!  Thanks again for your support and participation in this wonderful opportunity to spread Christmas cheer!

December Fitbit – Making our Holiday Meals Healthier using Canada’s food guide

The holiday season is fast approaching, and food and beverages are often central to many of our holiday celebrations and festivities. The new Canada’s food guide is a great tool to help you and your family make healthier food choices throughout this holiday season.

  1. Keep Proportions in Mind
  2. Encourage your family to use Canada’s food guide as a model at holiday meals. Aim to fill half the plate with vegetables and fruit and choose protein foods and whole grain foods for the other two quarters of the plate.
  • Be Mindful

  1. The new food guide encourages us to think beyond what we eat, and to also think about how we eat. During celebrations there is often an abundance of food and festivities. Use these tips to help your kids be more mindful eaters in the busyness of the holiday season:
  • Take time to eat: find the time and space to sit down as a family and focus on eating without any distractions.
  • Notice your feelings of hunger and fullness: encourage kids to make food choices based on their hunger level, rather than boredom or availability.
  • Think about your drink
  • There are lots of sweets and treats during the holiday season. Replacing sugary drinks with water is a simple way to reduce the amount of sugar your kids are having. Let your kids try adding fresh fruit to water if they want a special drink for a special occasion. Here are some ideas to try:

  1. Chopped apples + cinnamon stick
  2. Cranberry + lemon
  3. Raspberries + cucumber
  4. Blackberries + mint

*To avoid risk of choking, make flavoured water in a pitcher and serve in glasses without fruit or flavours.

  • Think Beyond Food to Celebrate

  1. Finally, instead of celebrating with food, try celebrating with a family activity like playing a favourite game, making a holiday craft, going skating or playing outside.
