What Do You Do In The Event Of Inclement Weather

Good Afternoon Guardian Nation!

As you may have heard, there is a possibility of some nasty weather coming our way this afternoon into this evening and tomorrow. I have included some information below for your perusal.

Excerpt from Special Message from the Director of Education

In the event of an inclement weather day being declared, and the buses are cancelled due to the weather and unsafe driving conditions, our school will be closed and students will have a remote learning day. Teachers will communicate through their Google Classroom. Teachers will post work in the morning, no later than 10 a.m. and students will work on their own timing in their home. This will allow all students to access learning and we will be continuing to keep one and all safe.

For updated information please monitor the WCDSB website, social media feeds, and radio stations for information on cancellations.

Thanks for all that you are doing to keep our community safe. Please reach out to us if you need help or guidance.

If you have any questions or comments, do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Advent Week #1 and End of November Update

Advent Week #1

Hope

 Advent Wreath Blessing
Lord our God,
we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ:
he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us he is the Savior of every nation.
Lord God,
let your blessing come upon us
as we light the candles of this wreath.
May the wreath and it’s light
be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation.
May he come quickly and not delay.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Welcome to another season of Advent!  The themes of Advent include Hope, Peace, Love and Joy.  Advent is not a season of gloom and despair; it is an invitation to hope, to embrace the light of Christ and to be at peace with one another, to live in joyful expectation of the life of the world to come.  Let us prepare our hearts for Christmas by discovering God and know God in the love of others.

Thank you to our families and our teachers who were able to connect virtually, or over the phone in collaboration of supporting your child(ren) at Holy Family.  Learning over the past eight months has looked very different than what we have ever seen.  So far, everyone is hanging in there.  We are focused on academics and the well-being of everyone here so that we can stay healthy and continue to learn in school.

Please help your child to remember to bring their masks (at least 2 per day) to school each day (every student was provided with 4 masks from the WCDSB and the Ministry).  Your child(ren) also needs a water bottle to stay hydrated every day.  The drinking fountains are closed and they need to use the water bottle refilling stations with their own bottle.

Parents, please, please, please continue to complete the student self-assessment every morning before school for each child in your family before sending him/her/to school. The assessment will help with the decision for students to go to school or stay home based on Public Health symptom guidelines. The staff at Holy Family really appreciate your dedication to doing this in order to help keep our school community as safe as possible! Visit wcdsb.ca for the most current news and COVID19 updates.

We know it’s difficult, especially with our older students, for them to keep their social group extremely small at this developmental stage of their lives (especially if they have the choice). Parents, please continue to help with this to keep our students and families safe; please help to say no to get-togethers outside the school for the time being. More information can be found on the Waterloo Public Health website about current guidelines. Thank-you.

Umbrella Project for December: Self Compassion

Please find below an important message from Dr. Jen at The Umbrella Project!

Stop judging yourself as a parent so harshly!

Parenting is one of the toughest jobs in the world. Children don’t come with step-by-step instructions and there is a reason that millions of parenting books exist, all with different solutions to the same problems. Just like snowflakes, each child is completely unique and therefore responds differently to the world and our attempts to guide them.  How many times has an idea worked brilliantly for one of your children and not at all for the next? Every feel like one day you have this parenting thing nailed and the next day want to give up completely? Such is the nature of raising another human with their own agenda and parents deserve to treat themselves with a high level of compassion on the tough days.

Unfortunately, research and experience show us that this is not the case. As parents, we are terrible critics of our own best efforts to raise our children and we now know that the more we judge our own parenting, the more likely it is that our child will develop symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The solution – Less self-blame and more non-judgmental acceptance of our own parenting skills. In other words, show our children what self-compassion looks like in action. None of us are perfect parents, you will make mistakes and that’s OK!

It sounds simple but remembers that most of us have a very vocal inner critic, evaluating our every move. Start by noticing your own self-judgement and then try to think of what you might say to a good friend who was in the same situation. Say these words to yourself and remember, beating yourself up in an effort to be a better parent is having the opposite effect on your child’s wellbeing. Instead, take ownership of your feelings and choices, recognize when you make mistakes, apologize, keep learning and move on.

You’ve got this!
Dr. Jen, The Umbrella Project

Winter Weather

Just another reminder to make sure that your child(ren) are coming to school with the proper winter gear to be worn outside at recess. As stated earlier in the year, our goal is to have the students outside as much as possible this year. Hats, gloves, snow pants, boots, extra mittens and socks are all must haves this year. Please make sure that your child(ren) is outfitted properly so they stay as warm as possible.

Wishing you and your family a very blessed Advent Season!
